My Wife

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 6:52 PM
During Clarion, I have become a choad. All I ever talk about with my wife is my stories, my writing, things that have happened while writing, whether I'm a good enough writer, is this story good enough, and maybe I can write some more.

I know I'd want to punch me in the face.

And yet she's still there, loving me, supporting me. It feels like a complete blessing, like great wings attached to my back. I know I'm a shallow twit now, the sort of obsessed artist who I normally mock, and I suspect that I'll be doing this for some time afterwards. My writing's suddenly become a lot harder, and a lot more psychodramatical.

She's still there.

I don't know why she's there, but I love her for that.

A Quick Pimping

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 9:39 AM
[info]shadesong's blogathon is starting tomorrow, in which she does a post every half-hour for 24 hours to donate to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. Click here for more details. She has auctions running, and cool flashficlets, and... oh, I'm too tired to sum up properly. It's cool, and you'll get Stuff out of it if you do, and it's for a worthy cause. So go.

In other news, I:

1) Need to rearrange my life when I get back so that I can spend two hours writing daily, no matter what. Eep.
2) Need to finish critiquing six stories before breakfast.
3) Need to write a big ol' post on this week's guest speaker, a personal hero of mine, in which I will fanboy-bukkake you all with my squee, but that takes time I do not have.
4) Need to do more research on the Cuyahoga River. Yes, it caught fire. We in Cleveland are not thrilled to discuss that.

Take the Wii and run

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 10:06 PM
We have a Wii.

N decided to get herself one as a congratulatory present, but we called around town and called around town and there weren't any (apparently they're popular! Who knew?!) At dinner with friends tonight, our friend S mentioned that she and her wife had obtained the elusive Wii at a Target.

So we trundled off to Target. And there were no Wiis in the case. The case was Wiiless.

However, the security guard and the electronics clerk were carefully reviewing the contents of a Wii box at the electronics desk. They were just re-boxing it when I said, "Um, do you have any more Wiis?" (Seriously. Why did they name it that? Does its plural take tenement photographs? Does it muckrake?)

"Have this one," the clerk said. And we said, "Okay!"

"Let me just go look at the games really quick," said [info]darthrami. So we ducked back down the aisle -- leaving the Wii, our Wii, alone and exposed on the counter, and the clerk wandering away, as they do.

There in the aisle, a little girl was scuff-kicking against the empty Wii case while her mother whispered in best please-don't-do-this-to-me-it's-9PM mode, "They're all out, honey."

"Buh. Buh, buh. BUH I WANNIT!"

"We'll get you one of these ones," the mother said, scooching her sniffling juvenile over to the X-Box display just a few inches onward.

"I don't, I don't, I dun WANT one of THOSE ONES!"

"Honey," I urged N, who was faffling among the different games and controllers, "Let's go buy the thing." I wanted to say, I'll take you to Best Buy to get games! I'll take you to the moon! But if that Momzilla comes out of the aisle and sees the Wii on the counter, it won't be your Wii anymore!

After a blithe, dazzled moment, [info]darthrami followed me out of the aisle and said happily, "Okay! Look, I grabbed an extra contro--"

"That's nice, baby, let's buy the thinger!"

Momzilla and "I WANT A WII!" stayed in the aisle, and the clerk rang us out and quickly, quickly triple-bagged our new gaming system, lest we be attacked by half the browsers in the store.

...And now there is a brain in our TV, and it wants me to bowl with it.

Awesome Sauce Indeed!

Unexpected Interjections

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 3:30 PM
ME, to Megan: "How's your story coming?"

MEGAN: "Pretty good. I got seven scenes done last night. Only problem is, I still have to work on the ending."

ME (with special sarcasm filters on): "You know what ending always works? 'And then they woke up.' Foolproof. Ends any story. Easy as pie."

NEIL GAIMAN: "Funny, it took a lot of work for me."
